Languages Canada at Queen's Park!

Languages Canada members, students, staff and volunteers attended our inaugural Day at Queen's Park this past Monday to demonstrate the impact the language education sector has on the success and reputation of Ontario’s education system, its economy, tourism, workforce and immigration. We asked for ongoing government support to continue our work to uphold Ontario’s standing as a leading language education destination.

Some of Our Asks:

  • That the province of Ontario request the federal government to amend regulations to allow international language students equal access to work rights.
  • That the province of Ontario request that all Ontario ESL and FSL programs be accredited by an internationally recognized independent body.
  • That research be conducted to: a) Understand how language education can support Ontario’s post-secondary education strategy; b) Determine how language education can best support immigration and workforce objectives.
  • Referencing preliminary 2015 data, we cautioned that between 2014-2015, student numbers in Ontario declined by three per cent. If the province had matched the estimated global language education sector growth rate of five per cent, Ontario should have received 59,406 international language students in 2015 — a difference of more than 4,000 students and $90 M in lost export revenue (read the press release: Ontario loses more than $90 M in revenue due to a decline in international student enrollment).

Our voices were heard, and the day was a great success. Thank you to all those who participated!
