The MOVA Initiative
Languages Canada Support for Ukrainians

Languages Canada members are extending support to those impacted by war in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people and, as of today, IRCC has approved more than 120,000 CUAET (Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel) applications. Ukrainians making their journey to safety in Canada will require access to English and/or French language courses – an integral part of successful settlement in Canada.

That’s why, in collaboration with members, partners, and the Global Shapers Community, Languages Canada is proud to launch the MOVA Initiative.

Mova is the Ukrainian word for language, and through this initiative, affected individuals will have access to free English or French language courses at accredited member institutions, advanced academic pathway programs, places in diploma and certificate programs, as well as summer ESL or FSL classes for children.

For Ukrainians

To take English or French courses through the MOVA Initiative, all interested individuals are invited to complete the registration form here.

For LC members and partners

To submit an offer of free or discounted courses, or other forms of support, members and partners are invited to contact the Languages Canada team.

About Languages Canada

Languages Canada is a national non-profit representing Canada’s premier English and French language programs dedicated primarily to welcoming students and professionals. On an annual basis, our members welcome thousands of students (i.e., 150,000 students in 2019), many of whom continue to university and college studies, become part of the Canadian labour force, and make Canada their home.

The association works closely with federal and provincial governments in the areas of immigration, quality assurance, promotion, and, as the pandemic erupted, health. Given our members’ global scope and culture of diversity and inclusivity, it is a natural reaction to care for students and societies in need. As we have done before with the Syrian Refugee Integration Initiative and with the Great East Japan Earthquake Initiative to help those affected by war and natural disaster, Languages Canada is extending support for students and families impacted by tragedy.

About the Global Shapers Community

An initiative of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of young professionals under the age of 30 driving dialogue, action, and change. With more than 7,000 members, the Global Shapers Community spans over 170 countries with nearly 400 hubs around the world.

Canada’s Global Shapers have extensive experience convening young people from diverse backgrounds to share concrete ideas on some of the most critical challenges facing Canada, leveraging their perspectives as entrepreneurs, policy professionals, non-profit leaders, artists, health professionals and much more.

Reskill for the Future is one of the impact areas the community works on. We strongly believe that language training is key to providing displaced Ukrainians coming to Canada with the necessary skills to survive, access employment opportunities, and build a future.

The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people and, as of today, IRCC has approved more than 120,000 CUAET (Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel) applications. Many Canadians, Canadian organizations, and governmental bodies have stepped forward to support those impacted, both here in Canada and stranded overseas. Thousands have now begun making their journey to safety in Canada and will require access to English and/or French language courses – an integral part of successful settlement of these individuals in Canada.
