30-minute one-on-one meetings with Trade Commissioners will be pre-booked on behalf of interested conference attendees. Meetings will be scheduled from 10:30am to 6:00pm Monday, February 24 and from 8:30am to 4:30pm on Tuesday, February 25.*

As the Education Promotion Officer at the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo, Megumi Akiyama is responsible for the Embassy’s bi-annual EduCanada Fairs in the fall and spring. With the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games approaching, the Japanese government and private sector are placing great emphasis on developing global human resources. Canada is one of the most popular language study destinations for Japanese students; last year over 20,000 of them studied at one or more Languages Canada member schools. Recently, many Japanese junior and senior high schools, as well as post-secondary institutions, are looking for partner schools in Canada for short to long-term programs including summer and winter programs. Now is an ideal time to seek and cultivate Japanese partners. Megumi looks forward to meeting LC members at the conference!

Laura Ballesteros
Embassy of Canada in Madrid, Spain

Laura Ballesteros has been an Education, Culture and Advocacy Officer at the Embassy of Canada to Spain since 2000. Prior to joining the Global Affairs Canada team, she worked as translator (English-Spanish) and as lecturer in the field of translation and interpretation in Madrid. Laura holds a master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Limoges (France) and an undergraduate degree in English and Spanish from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain).

Paola Bucalossi
Embassy of Canada in Rome, Italy

Paola Bucalossi has been the Trade Commissioner for Education at the Embassy of Canada to Italy since 2012, where she is also responsible for Albania and Malta. In this role. Paola is very active in the promotion of Canadian education and organizes yearly EduCanada Fairs in Rome and Milan, hosting educational institutions from all sectors. Since 2014, Paola has organized and led many familiarization trips to Canada for European journalists (Italy, Greece, Germany, Spain, UK) to generate exposure for Canadian education excellence at all levels, and promote study options for European students. Paola has been working at the Embassy for over 30 years, occupying a variety of positions during her long career (Property, Protocol, Political, Public Affairs and Communications).

Stéphanie Loiseau
Embassy of Canada in Moscow, Russia

Stéphanie Loiseau holds 15 years of experience at Global Affairs Canada. Since 2018, she has been the Commercial and Economic Counsellor at the Embassy of Canada in Moscow, responsible for education, arts and culture in Russia, Uzbekistan and Armenia. Stéphanie previously worked as Second Secretary (Trade and Cooperation) at the Canadian Embassy in Algiers, as well as Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City. In Ottawa, she held various positions with a focus on international trade, including Senior Advisor in the Division for Commercial Relations with the European Uniion and EFTA countries, and she took part in the negotiations of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Stéphanie holds a master’s degree in project management and a B.A. in public relations from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She speaks French, English, Spanish, and Russian.

Fevronia Novac
Embassy of Canada in Paris, France

Fevronia Novac has worked at the Embassy of Canada in Paris in support of academic cooperation between Canada and France since 2009. She observes that France is more and more willing to establish collaborations with Canada in ESL, student and research mobility. Previously, Fevronia worked for the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada, as well as for the Networks of Centres of Excellence, where she administrated research funding in various fields. Fevronia earned her PhD from the University of Ottawa in French literature in 2002.

Veronica Soto
Consulate of Canada in Guadalajara, Mexico

Veronica Soto joined the Consulate of Canada in Guadalajara in 2003 and has been responsible for the education sector for the past nine years. She has led some successful education trade missions to Canada and assisted an important number of visits from Canadian education institutions to Western Mexico. Veronica worked at the Jalisco Ministry of Education, where she was responsible for Asia and North America relations, and served the Jalisco office of the federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), where she was the coordinator for external business promotion. Veronica holds a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from the University of Guadalajara, a master’s degree in development and international cooperation from the University Complutense in Madrid, Spain and a diploma in leadership by the ITESO University.
